macOS Sonoma (version 14) was announced at WWDC on June 5, 2023, and launched on September 26, 2023. It is named after the Sonoma region in California and is the eleventh macOS release to bear a name from the company’s home state of California. macOS Sonoma introduces interactive desktop widgets, which can be placed anywhere on the desktop and used directly, along with the ability to add iPhone widgets through Continuity. It adds a new Game Mode that prioritises CPU and GPU performance for games while reducing audio and input latency. Video conferencing gains Presenter Overlay, which layers the presenter on top of the content they are sharing, and Reactions that trigger 3D augmented-reality effects with hand gestures. Safari adds Profiles to keep work and personal browsing separate, stronger private browsing protections, and the ability to turn any website into a web app on the Dock. Messages improves search, introduces stickers and a redesigned location-sharing experience, and adds catch-up and swipe-to-reply features. New slow-motion aerial screen savers pan across locations around the world, and passwords and passkeys can be securely shared with a group through iCloud Keychain. macOS Sonoma supports Macs with Apple silicon and select Intel-based Macs from 2018 and later.
